“Fantastic event… I feel inspired!”
Member of the audience at Women with Bright Ideas Competition

On Thursday I had the opportunity to spend the morning as a judge for the Women with Bright Ideas Competition. It was so impressive. Incredibly exciting entries for products that have the potential to change lives for the better. After a Dragons Den style final, where the eight final entries were pitched to the judges, we stretched the decision making time out to the final minute, as we debated and deliberated the merits of each finalist. That was challenging! The effort and commitment that went into each idea was exceptional.

The Judges voted, the audience votes were counted and the result was a tie for the first prize, between Chloe Meineck for her Musical Memory Box  and joint entries Catherine Dodd and Rosie Phelps for Doddl .

“The Showcase yesterday exceeded our expectations with the number of attendees and the interest it generated with staff in Lackham House . Sheena Awdry,  Marketing Co-ordinator Engineering Innovation Network.

The Women with Bright Ideas competition was launched on 23rd June to celebrate Women in Engineering Day  dedicated to celebrating the work that women do in engineering and to showcase the great engineering careers available for girls.  Engineering Innovation Network launched the competition on  3 June 2014,  National Women in Engineering Day .To mark the occasion, Engineering Innovation Network – South West (EIN-SW)  teamed up with  Wiltshire Enterprise and NT CADCAM, to launch a Dragon’s Den style competition exclusively for women. The challenge went out to all budding entrepreneurs with commercial ideas to submit their most creative ideas to a prestigious panel of judges.

Haydn Earl, EIN-SW project manager, said: ‘There are almost 20,000 female engineers in the UK, with almost 400 working in a design engineering role. We hope this competition will inspire even more women to make their bright ideas commercial realities.
