Simon Day with Steve Lane at Shaw House, Newbury at the Learner Achievement Awards 2011, on behalf of the West Berkshire Adult & Family Learning Partnership.

The awards celebrate the achievement of individuals, organisations and businesses who are dedicated to the learning and development of adults across West Berkshire. This year there were 12 award categories covering a wide spectrum of learning including employment skills, professional qualifications and training, apprenticeships, community and personal development and family learning. Each winner received a monetary award and a certificate in recognition of their achievement.

Simon was awarded the Employee in Learning Award for his dedication in achieving his IPC Certification, which he studied for in his spare time. After sitting a two hour exam he was delighted to receive confirmation that he had been successful, this has really inspired him and he told me that he would like to learn as much as he can in his work and then study for the Advanced version.

The timing of the awards coincided with the start of the 20th Adult Learners Week which runs from the 14th to the 20th May 2011.From learning Pilates to gaining a PhD, Adult Learners' Week celebrates learning and learners in all their diversity, inspiring thousands of people each May to try something new. The initiative promotes the benefits of all kinds of learning, whether it is for fun or leading to a qualification. Partners include Newbury College, Voluntary sector organisations, Neighbourhood Learning Centres, VT Careers and local schools. The Awards were presented by Graham Pask, Chairman of West Berkshire Council and the Award Sponsors, featured in the photographer below.
